Helpful information about cremation in DC

District of Columbia law requires that a death must be registered with the local or state vital records office within five days and before the body is buried or cremated. (District of Columbia Code § 7-211.)  It is usually the mortuary or cremation organization that prepares and files the death certificate, and copies can be ordered for you at the time of filing.

If you need to order copies of a death certificate later,  the District of Columbia Department of Health website allows you to download a mail-in order form or order death certificates online.
