Helpful information about cremation in Minnesota

Minnesota law states that a death must be registered with the state registrar of vital statistics within five days and before the body is cremated. (Minnesota Statutes § 144.221.) Typically, the funeral home, mortuary, cremation organization, or other person in charge of the deceased person’s remains will prepare and file the death certificate.

If you need to order copies of a death certificate at a later time, visit the website of the Minnesota Department of Health. From the MDH website, you can find instructions for ordering death certificates by mail, fax, or email.
