Helpful information about cremation in Oregon

Oregon law requires that a death certificate be filed with the county registrar within five days of death and before the final disposition of the body. (Oregon Revised Statutes § 432.307.) Typically, the mortuary, cremation organization, or other person in charge of the deceased’s remains prepares and files the death certificate.

If you need copies of the death certificate later, visit Oregon Public Health Division.  The PHD website will allow you to download a mail-in order form or find info about ordering death certificates in online, by phone or in person.
