Helpful information about cremation in South Dakota
South Dakota law requires a death certificate be filed with the health department within five days of the death. (South Dakota Laws § 34-25-25.) The mortuary or cremation organization can file this for you, and can also order them for you at the time of the death.
If you need to order copies of a death certificate at a later time, visit South Dakota Department of Health . The DOH website allows you to download a mail-in order form or find information about applying for death certificates online, by phone, or in person.
