Helpful information about cremation in Virginia

Virginia law requires that a death certificate be filed within three days of the death and before the body is buried, cremated, or shipped out of the state. (Virginia Code § 32.1-263.) This is usually done on your behalf by the mortuary or cremation organization, and copies can be ordered for you at the time of filing.

If you need copies of a death certificate at a later time, visit Virginia Department of Health. The VDH website allows you to download a mail-in order form or find information about ordering death certificates online, by phone or in-person.
